Werner Timmers becomes the first captain of the new MS Rotterdam

In July 2021 there will also be a new cruise ship building for Holland America Line, a cruise brand of Carnival Corporation. This is the new MS Rotterdam. This cruise ship was supposed to be called MS Ryndam

The name of the new building was changed in 2020, when MS Rotterdam was already in the middle of construction. Holland America Line sold four cruise ships as part of the corona pandemic, including the old MS Rotterdam. But since it is tradition that a cruise ship with this name is always in the Holland America Line’s fleet, it was decided that the new building should bear this name.

Timmers is a special captain of the Holland America Line

Holland America Line has now also named the first captain for the new cruise ship: with the launch of the MS Rotterdam, Werner Timmers will take over the helm of the new building. Timmers is a special captain of the Holland America Line, because he has been with the shipping company since 1984 and was already at the helm of every construction class of the Holland America Line – so he knows every class of ship in the company and can therefore be used variably at any time will. Timmers was last in command of the MS Koningsdam.

Of course, the first contact between the captain and the cruise ship will not be on the first voyage. The future captain of the MS Rotterdam is to travel to Italy in the next few months to accompany the final construction progress at the Fincantieri shipyard.

As mentioned, Timmers joined Holland America Line in 1984. At that time he started as an intern, and by 1996 he had finally worked his way up to become captain. Among other things, he has already taken the helm of MS Eurodam, MS Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, MS Ryndam, MS Zaandam and MS Zuiderdam in his hand.
