Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas arrived in Cozumel on Wednesday with 1,068 passengers, becoming the first to visit this island since the start of the pandemic.
The Governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González, announced and celebrated the return of cruise ships to Cozumel, the most important cruise destination in the world, said at a press conference at the El Cid La Ceiba hotel, in the company of state and municipal authorities , Royal Caribbean executives and representatives of the business chambers of the state and the island, among others.
15 months have passed since the last cruise arrived at the port of Cozumel.
We asked some questions of some port workers, who comment that the pandemic has hit jobs on the island very hard.
One of them comments that they have a job only when cruise ships arrive on the island, so during these 15 months she has been unemployed.
The passengers aboard the Adventure of the Seas, for the most part, remained on board the ship, and only a few made catamaran excursions and diving, this due to the bad weather that the island presents.

“It has been a year and four months since the pandemic put us to the test, at the end of February 2020 the ships stopped arriving on the island, and despite the challenges in 2020 I must acknowledge the spirit of the cruise community not to lower our arms and work to develop and implement these health protocols that help us to have better sustainable tourism practices that allow us to renew trips, “said the governor.
The arrival of this first cruise to Cozumel, added, invites us to see the horizon with optimism, since two out of every three passengers will choose this type of trip again and 58 percent of international tourists who have never experienced a cruise are willing to do so in the coming months.
